More people are traveling around the world than ever before. Through awareness-raising and reasoned regulation, destinations must take a lead in informing and requiring responsible behavior by travelers and travel companies. GSTC plays the role of setting international standards in sustainable tourism by fostering increased knowledge of sustainable tourism practices, promoting the adoption of sustainable tourism principles, and building the demand for sustainable travel. Randy Durband is the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). He brings his knowledge of the business of travel, his global network of travel professionals, and a passion for sustainability to support sustainable tourism, poverty reduction through tourism development in emerging destinations, authenticity in heritage destinations, and tourism destination stewardship. He has served as technical advisor for tourism for the UN agencies ILO and UNESCO, other development organizations and foundations; during which he worked in the development and promotion of community-based tourism destinations and training programs in several developing countries.
